NYFW | The Shows | Recap

On 9/5/18 the brand KUR by Sri Lankan designer Kasuni Rathnasuriya kicked off fashion week with their SS19 collection. Simplicity Redefined are the words that I would use to describe this collection. Clean white silhouettes with handmade Dutch and Portuguese lace, A-line skits and crisp cargo pant suits were worn by the models while carrying oversized leather bags. Comfy mules completed the look of the collection which Rathnasuriya named “Compact Traveler.” The collection was a mix of business casual and leisure. Perfect for any women on the go or just staying at home and relaxing. Kur is an authentic women’s ready –to –wear brand that expresses a sense of freedom. The brand draws inspiration from the tradition and heritage of Sri...

NYFW / The Shows / Part 3

Hakkaya Akkaya is a Turkish designer who studied fashion design at Istasyon Art Academy. After he graduated Akkaya worked as a Design Department  Manager for some leading brands within the Turkish textile industry. In 2010, he established his own atelier firm. He has been showing his collections at NYFW The Shows for the past 6 years now.  Black and white silhouettes and bold stripes with hints of Zebra prints hit the runway at the Hakan Akkaya S/S 18 Fashion show on Monday September 11th 2017. The collection was inspired by existentialism; which is the work associated within the late 19th - 20th century European philosophers. While the predominant value of existentialist thought is commonly acknowledged to be freedom, its primary virtue is authenticity. Often times black and white can be seen as boring or mundane,...

NYFW / The Shows / Part 2

For the first time ever Fashion Week went BIG! Yes, they supersized it! Bold, Beautiful and Bigger models sashayed down the runway at the Addition Elle and Torrid shows at NYFW. Talk about a moment in history! For countless years the fashion industry has glorified the slim, slender, skinny (almost sickly) model. From magazine covers to popular television shows the imagine of beauty has always been “thin is in” and if a woman did not fall into that category then they were neither in or attractive. Well look how the that image is slowly changing.  These shows are helping transform the fashion industry with bold empowering moves towards diversity and inclusiveness; not just in fashion but in the world! Embracing oneself and...

NYFW/ The Shows / Part 1

Well another New York Fashion Week (NYFW)  season has come to an end. This season designers presented their Spring/Summer 2018 collections at Skylight Clarkson, Pier 59 Studios and too many other off sight venues to name.  The hustle and bustle of fashion week is always hectic, but this season it was more than hectic is was exhausting. The venues were small, far apart and un accommodating. Sadly the essence of NYFW has dramatically changed for the worse not the better. I am heart broken that fashion week has come to this. Long gone are the tents at Bryant Park or the elegance of Lincoln Center. The reality is NYFW needs a make over! Yes a complete face lift; before it...

PFW / Part 2

My second show was a presentation by designer Martin Grant. Martin is an Australian designer who launched his first ready to wear collection at the tender age of 16. He was quickly noticed by the Australian fashion industry and was named designer of the year. This young prodigy went on to study sculpture at the Victorian College of the Arts, but soon after relocated to Paris where he established his studio. There he produced his first runway show in the heart of the Marais district. Throughout the years Martin has built his own fashion house and has become a prominent designer with a network of private clients and international buyers. His designs give me a Jackie Kennedy feeling, very first...

NYFW / The Shows / Part 3

Leanne Marshall is certainly no stranger to fashion week. She continues to captivate audiences with her sophisticated designs and timeless elegance. You might remember her from season five of project runway where she won the judges hearts and became that seasons winner. Born in Yuba City, California she has always had a passion for fashion. At the age of twelve she started making costumes for her ballet and dance performances. This inspired her to pursue a career as a fashion designer. Leanne obtained her degree at The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco. Her ready-to-wear and bridal collections are currently carried in over 18 boutiques worldwide. Her dresses and gowns have become red carpet favorites.           ...

Anniesa Hasibuan is an Indonesian designer who made her debut last season at NYFW and has truly put Indonesia on the map. Anniesa combines her cut-edge patterns with premium materials as well as sequin stones, pearls, and lace. Her F/W 2017 Collection "Drama" was just that! Inspired by the story life of women who has power to change weakness into strengths and upholds the ethic as a true woman. This collection was classic, dynamic, and elegant. She captivated the audience with her glamorous and elaborate designs. This is my second time attending her runway show and I was more than blown away!!! She recently won an award for the most intricate, artistic and creative couture fashion collection, presented at the GSF...

NYFW / The Shows / Part 1

New York Fashion Week is always such an exciting time, from getting ready and becoming "fashionably fabulous" to waiting for the shows to start. I just love the glitz and glam of it all, but more importantly than that I value the people I meet during fashion week. I have met some pretty amazing people along the way who I now consider my friends. This past fashion week was no exception. I had a wonderful time seeing old faces and getting to meet new and exciting people in this industry. Some people may say that the fashion industry is full of self absorbed arrogant snobs who have nothing better to do then dress up and take pictures, well I certainly...
