| NYFW The Shows | Recap |

Another NYFW has come and gone! I still can't believe that I have been attending shows since 2014! I can still remember my first show like it was yesterday. Through the years I have learned so much about this industry; which unfortunately can be very shallow and un inclusive. Well  I am hoping to change that! This fashion week was Spring/Summer 2020 with many shows being held at Spring Studios which is an event venue on 6 St. Johns Lane in Tribeca and Pier 59 Studios in Chelsea, and of course the bigger designers had off site locations for their shows. I honestly miss the days that fashion week was in one central location like Bryant Park or Lincoln Center!! Please Lord bring...

Asian Persuasion Design duo Laurence & Chico has done it    again with another mind blowing show, but this time the audience left New York and flew straight to Thailand! Laurence and Chico is a Canadian based women’s wear brand. The brand was started in 2015 by Laurence Li and Chico Wang; who met while attending Parsons fashion school in New York City. Laurence is the illustrator and muse while Chico is the Creative Director. The duo put their creativity and love for fashion to good use by developing a brand that is not only appealing, but versatile. On February 7th2019 Laurence and Chico presented their F/W 19 collection and took NYFW to another continent! Asia to be more specific. The runway lit up...

The Beauty of L’AGENCE

Chic, sophisticated and timeless are the words that I would use to describe L’AGENCE’S F/W 2019 collection. L’AGENCE is a high-end California based women’s wear company that was started in 2008. The brand is available in 300 stores including Bergdorf Goodman, Barney's New York, Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom. The brand recently opened a flagship store on Madison Avenue in New York City. During New York Fashion Week (NYFW) I had the wonderful opportunity of sitting down with Mr. Jeffery Rudes the CEO/ Creative Director to discuss his role and what’s next for the brand.     Kia Danielle: How long have you been the CEO of L’AGENCE? Jeff Rudes: I have been the CEO/ Creative Director for a year and a half now. I am...

NYFW | The Shows | Recap

On 9/5/18 the brand KUR by Sri Lankan designer Kasuni Rathnasuriya kicked off fashion week with their SS19 collection. Simplicity Redefined are the words that I would use to describe this collection. Clean white silhouettes with handmade Dutch and Portuguese lace, A-line skits and crisp cargo pant suits were worn by the models while carrying oversized leather bags. Comfy mules completed the look of the collection which Rathnasuriya named “Compact Traveler.” The collection was a mix of business casual and leisure. Perfect for any women on the go or just staying at home and relaxing. Kur is an authentic women’s ready –to –wear brand that expresses a sense of freedom. The brand draws inspiration from the tradition and heritage of Sri...

NYFW / The Shows / Part 3

Hakkaya Akkaya is a Turkish designer who studied fashion design at Istasyon Art Academy. After he graduated Akkaya worked as a Design Department  Manager for some leading brands within the Turkish textile industry. In 2010, he established his own atelier firm. He has been showing his collections at NYFW The Shows for the past 6 years now.  Black and white silhouettes and bold stripes with hints of Zebra prints hit the runway at the Hakan Akkaya S/S 18 Fashion show on Monday September 11th 2017. The collection was inspired by existentialism; which is the work associated within the late 19th - 20th century European philosophers. While the predominant value of existentialist thought is commonly acknowledged to be freedom, its primary virtue is authenticity. Often times black and white can be seen as boring or mundane,...

NYFW / The Shows / Part 2

For the first time ever Fashion Week went BIG! Yes, they supersized it! Bold, Beautiful and Bigger models sashayed down the runway at the Addition Elle and Torrid shows at NYFW. Talk about a moment in history! For countless years the fashion industry has glorified the slim, slender, skinny (almost sickly) model. From magazine covers to popular television shows the imagine of beauty has always been “thin is in” and if a woman did not fall into that category then they were neither in or attractive. Well look how the that image is slowly changing.  These shows are helping transform the fashion industry with bold empowering moves towards diversity and inclusiveness; not just in fashion but in the world! Embracing oneself and...

NYFW/ The Shows / Part 1

Well another New York Fashion Week (NYFW)  season has come to an end. This season designers presented their Spring/Summer 2018 collections at Skylight Clarkson, Pier 59 Studios and too many other off sight venues to name.  The hustle and bustle of fashion week is always hectic, but this season it was more than hectic is was exhausting. The venues were small, far apart and un accommodating. Sadly the essence of NYFW has dramatically changed for the worse not the better. I am heart broken that fashion week has come to this. Long gone are the tents at Bryant Park or the elegance of Lincoln Center. The reality is NYFW needs a make over! Yes a complete face lift; before it...

PFW / Part 2

My second show was a presentation by designer Martin Grant. Martin is an Australian designer who launched his first ready to wear collection at the tender age of 16. He was quickly noticed by the Australian fashion industry and was named designer of the year. This young prodigy went on to study sculpture at the Victorian College of the Arts, but soon after relocated to Paris where he established his studio. There he produced his first runway show in the heart of the Marais district. Throughout the years Martin has built his own fashion house and has become a prominent designer with a network of private clients and international buyers. His designs give me a Jackie Kennedy feeling, very first...

NYFW / The Shows / Part 3

Leanne Marshall is certainly no stranger to fashion week. She continues to captivate audiences with her sophisticated designs and timeless elegance. You might remember her from season five of project runway where she won the judges hearts and became that seasons winner. Born in Yuba City, California she has always had a passion for fashion. At the age of twelve she started making costumes for her ballet and dance performances. This inspired her to pursue a career as a fashion designer. Leanne obtained her degree at The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco. Her ready-to-wear and bridal collections are currently carried in over 18 boutiques worldwide. Her dresses and gowns have become red carpet favorites.           ...
